WKF agreed that a new commission will be created: the WKF Ranking Commission. This new working group will be formed by chairman Toshihisa Nagura with members Davide Benetello, Francis Didier and Mariola Zarco, and it will deal with all the issues concerning the WKF rankings and their implementation in the Olympic qualification process.
WKF OLYMPIC PLANNING COMMISSION SETS ROADMAP FOR KARATE’S OLYMPIC DEBUT
The WKF Olympic Planning Commission met this week in Umag to discuss the upcoming steps ahead of the anticipated debut of Karate in the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 and in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
The meeting was headed by WKF President Antonio Espinós and had the participation of Commission chairman Gunnar Nordahl and members Davide Benetello, Francis Didier, Esteban Perez and Mariola Zarco. TOCOG Karate sport manager Toshie Murata and EKF General Secretary and Croatia Karate Federation President Stjepan Celan were also in attendance.
Main topics of the agenda included a review of the directives received from the Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee and the upcoming key dates towards the start of the event. The qualification system and the process to be eligible to participate in Buenos Aires 2018 were also analysed. The Commission decided on the soon-to-be-announced protocol to be implemented in order to guarantee the perfect conditions in the quest to be part of the event next year.
The venue and dates for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 qualifying tournament were also determined. The event that will complete the final list of participants of Karate at the YOG 2018 will be held in Umag (Croatia) from June 29-30, 2018.
At the meeting, it was also agreed that a new commission will be created: the WKF Ranking Commission. Concerning the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, the Commission announced that the qualification system for Karate’s Olympic debut will be finalised by the end of the year, once that the main principles to establish the system will be received from the IOC.
The WKF Olympic Planning Commission and the WKF Ranking Commission will meet again in September in Leipzig (Germany) coinciding with the celebration in the German city of the last Karate 1-Premier League event of the season.
